FAQS: FOSTERING WITH SPECTRUM PATHWAYS

Fostering involves providing a temporary home for children who can’t live with their birth families. As a foster parent, you’ll be responsible for the child’s day-to-day care, ensuring they are safe, nurtured, and supported.

We welcome applications from individuals and couples of all backgrounds, regardless of race, religion, marital status, or sexual orientation. The key requirements are a genuine commitment to caring for children and a safe and stable home environment.

The application process typically takes a few months and includes initial discussions, home assessments, background checks, and training sessions.

The length of placement varies. Some children may stay for a few days, while others might remain for months or even years. Our primary goal is always in the child’s best interest, whether that means reunification with biological families, long-term fostering, or adoption.

Yes, foster parents receive a stipend to cover the child’s daily expenses. This is not a salary or wage, but assistance to ensure all the child’s needs are met.

We provide ongoing training, 24/7 support lines, access to resources, regular check-ins, and more. Our team is always available to assist and guide you through challenges.

We always consider your preferences. However, the primary focus is on placing children in homes where their specific needs will be best met.

In some cases, yes. While the primary goal is often reunification with biological families, if this isn’t possible and adoption becomes an option, foster parents can discuss the possibility of adoption.

Become a Family Based Care Provider

Why foster with Spectrum Pathways?

Spectrum Pathways recognizes that hard work and dedication that is required to care for children and youth. Foster Parents are a major key to not only the function but also the development and growth of Spectrum Pathways. With that being said, Spectrum Pathways strives to ensure that all Family Based Care Providers feel valued, appreciated, and supported. We have encompassed fundamental factors to minimize stress and burnout and have incorporated self-are elements as well. Family Based Care Providers are provided with:

Weekly and/or daily support from a Child and Youth Care Practitioner to help with caring for children/youth placed in Family Based Care Provider homes.
Annual vacations/respite hours
A comprehensive per diem
An abundance of support from Spectrum Pathways Managerial team who possess a wealth of knowledge working within the Child Welfare System, as Frontline workers and experience and history of being a foster parent.

          Requirements

Must be 21 years old or older
Must have a home to support children/youth in – please note that foster homes do not need to be owned
There must be one adult who is identified as the primary caregiver. Foster parents can work, however, must create a detailed plan on how the children/youth will be supported during working hours should they need something
Medical Clearance must indicate good physical and mental health
Must have Standard First Aid and Non-violent Crisis Intervention (SP will support in obtaining)
Attendance and participation are expected for all training and development courses
Ability to be receptive to constructive feedback
Ability to be self-aware as well as foster and practice self-growth
Provide a smoke-free zone in space that children/youth will have access to
Possess exceptional organizational skills to keep track of dates, documents, appointments, receipts and meet deadlines Characteristics that Family Based Care Providers must possess
Flexibility, creativity, and patience
Good child/youth management skills
Some level of experience with children/youth
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to work as an effective team player on a multidisciplinary team
Ability to effectively problem solve and utilize crisis management skills
